How Early Should You Arrive at Brussels Airport?

The right departure time is worked out backwards
When a passenger calls us about a 9 a.m. flight, the first question is usually: what time should we leave? The honest answer is to count backwards. Start from the departure time, subtract the time you want to spend at the airport, then subtract the drive.
Then add a margin for the road. Traffic around Brussels can change from one day to the next, and an early morning start does not always mean an empty road.
Below is the reasoning we follow step by step. Adapt it to your airline, your luggage and how relaxed you like to be before a flight.
Step 1: time to spend inside the airport
Airlines generally ask passengers to arrive around two hours before a flight within Europe, and a little earlier for a long-haul flight. These are guidelines, not one universal rule: each airline sets its own check-in and bag drop closing times. The safest move is to read your booking confirmation and check the Brussels Airport website before you leave.
If you travel with checked luggage, a group or reduced mobility, give yourself more time at the airport rather than less.
Step 2: the drive to the airport
Travel time depends on where you start. From the centre of Brussels it is a short trip in normal conditions, from Leuven or Antwerp it is longer, and from Liège, Namur or Charleroi you should plan a proper margin. Our price page shows the main routes with their distances.
Peak hours, roadworks and weather are the three things that most often stretch a journey. A driver who knows the route can absorb some of it, but nobody controls a closed lane.
Step 3: the buffer you add on purpose
We recommend a margin on top of the calculated time. Thirty minutes is a comfortable minimum for most trips; add more for a long distance or an early morning departure. A buffer you do not use is a coffee at the terminal, a buffer you needed is a flight you did not miss.
If your plans change, tell your driver early. Booking a fixed pickup time in advance means the car is waiting for you rather than the other way round.
